"Live simply... so others may simply live"

"Humankind has not woven the web of life.
We are but one thread within it.
Whatever we do to the web, we do to ourselves.
All things are bound together.
All things connect."

History

Indian Head Massage (also called ‘champissage’ from the Indian word "champi" meaning head massage) has been practised in India for over 4000 years, and was incorporated within the ancient healing art of Ayurveda. It was introduced in England, as we know it today, by a man named Narendra Mehta in 1981. He grew up in India, then came over to England in the 1970’s and was very surprised to find that our barbers didn’t offer head massage as part of their practise. He greatly missed the therapeutic value of regular massage, which is a family tradition in India, and went back to his home country to learn the technique. He then used the technique along with his own study of Osteopathy and modern knowledge of Shiatsu and Acupressure, to develop what we know today as Indian Head Massage.

The Treatment

Indian Head Massage is performed with the client sitting upright in a chair with feet flat on the ground, fully clothed and with jewellery removed. At the initial consultation, a full medical history is taken along with health and lifestyle information. Gentle music is usually played to relax both client and practitioner.

Treatment involves the upper back, shoulders, arms, neck, scalp and face. The therapist uses a range of different massage pressures and rhythms to both stimulate and relax. Pressure points are worked on the face, and ears are gently pressed and tugged. The massage ends with a chakra balancing technique, to help bring the whole body into balance.

The variety of massage movements are used to relieve accumulated tension, stimulate circulation and restore joint movement. They can ease symptoms of stress, such as tension headaches, migraine and sinusitis. The massage also helps with emotional stress, anxiety, and depression, and creates a feeling of calm, and balance.

At the end of the treatment you should feel calm, relaxed, and recharged.

Frequently asked questions

  • What does it involve?
IHM is performed with the client sitting in a chair and works on the upper back, shoulders, arms, neck, scalp and face.

  • Do I need to remove any clothing?
No, it is performed fully clothed, but with jewellery removed from the head and neck.
  • How long does it take?
A usual session will last for about 30 minutes; allow 45 minutes for your first consultation.
  • Do you use oils?
No, there are no oils currently used during the massage.
  • How will I feel after the treatment?
Most clients will feel thoroughly relaxed and rejuvenated following the massage. However, occasionally you may get a slight headache or feel a bit congested after a treatment. This is due to the dispersal of the toxins out of your body, and should go within 24 hours. It is best, where possible, to relax for at least 20 minutes after a treatment and drink lots of water over the next 24 hours to help flush out the toxins.

About Nikki

I have been following a holistic path for many years, and have travelled many different roads. As a wife and mother, I realize the importance of leading a healthy lifestyle, and in living in harmony with nature. I also understand the stresses and strains of the ‘juggling act’ we call life! For this reason I have taken time to learn a technique in which I can help other people relax and rebalance, and return to their lives feeling more positive and energized. I am Reiki II attuned and a Practitioner of Indian Head Massage. I thoroughly enjoy giving massages and seeing my clients visibly calmer after a treatment.
